TomOkay, I've got a story for you: I Have Some Thoughts Minisode | VMA’s, Migos AI Trend, Kirk Franklin & Glorilla, & A Different World Reboot. Tell me what jumps out at you first.
CarolThe Migos AI trend is the part that actually worries me because it turns people into content without their permission. When you see those deepfakes circulating, nobody asked the artists if they wanted to be in some weird digital mashup. That kind of thing erodes trust in relationships faster than anything else because it makes consent feel optional.
TomYou're stretching "consent" pretty thin here; it's not like anyone is proposing marriage to a video file. The real issue with the Migos AI stuff is how easily fans blur the line between nostalgia and obsession when they start editing dead or retired artists into new songs. That's where the unhealthy attachment kicks in, not in the tech itself.
CarolCalling it unhealthy attachment misses who is actually suffering here, since the artists themselves are the ones having their images stripped away. You can’t diagnose fan behavior while ignoring that the original creators didn’t sign off on being turned into raw material for a meme.
TomBut focusing entirely on the artists ignores that most of these edits are low-effort fan projects that get buried within hours. The deeper problem isn't the theft itself, it's the compulsive need to resurrect people who aren't there anymore, which points to a genuine void in how we process loss rather than a legal breach.
CarolYou’re treating a creative violation like a grief counseling session, but the artists don’t owe us emotional support for how we handle their absence. We need to stop conflating the technical act of copying audio with the psychological state of the fan doing the copying, because one is a copyright issue and the other is a behavioral pattern.
TomSeparating the copyright ticket from the human mess works fine until the artist sees their own face dancing in a song they hate, at which point it stops being a legal footnote and becomes a very real relationship injury. You can’t fix that gap by filing a DMCA notice, even though that’s usually all the industry wants to do.
CarolA DMCA notice is a blunt instrument, sure, but calling it a “relationship injury” assumes the artist owes the fan an emotional reckoning. The harm is purely economic and reputational; the fix is enforcement, not empathy for someone who stole their likeness to fill a personal void.
TomReducing it to pure economics leaves out why the artist actually cares beyond the bank account. It’s about control over their legacy, which is a core piece of identity you can’t restore with a cease-and-desist letter. Fans treat these edits like harmless fun, but they’re essentially rewriting history without asking the main character if they want to go along with the plot twist.
CarolLegacy control is a real concept, but applying it to fan edits stretches the term past its breaking point. An artist has rights over their work, not ownership over every stray copy floating around a hard drive. You’re framing a nuisance as an existential threat because it feels easier than admitting the actual damage is mostly cosmetic and temporary.
TomDismissing it as cosmetic ignores that seeing yourself mocked online does real damage to self-perception, regardless of whether the clip lasts five minutes or five days. You can’t separate the reputational hit from the psychological one because your brain processes both as the same kind of social rejection. It’s less about permanent erasure and more about the immediate sting of losing dignity in public view.
CarolYour brain treats public mockery as social rejection, but that’s a universal human response, not proof the fan edit caused unique psychological harm. Conflating basic embarrassment with clinical distress lets fans hide behind our biology instead of owning their lack of consent-seeking. The injury is real enough to warrant enforcement, but it doesn’t require us to pretend the fan is a traumatized child needing guidance.
TomCalling basic embarrassment a reason to drop the therapeutic lens misses that public humiliation triggers the exact same neural pathways as physical pain, making it a genuine stressor rather than just awkwardness. I’m not excusing the theft, I’m pointing out that ignoring the biological reality of shame makes the conversation feel cold and detached from how humans actually function.
CarolEquating social shame with physical pain is biologically inaccurate and clinically useless here. It turns a clear-cut case of unauthorized use into a vague medical mystery where everyone needs healing instead of accountability. The Migos AI trend isn’t a trauma event requiring intervention, it’s a boundary violation requiring removal.
TomYou’re stripping the humanity right out of a clear boundary violation, Carol. The Migos aren’t walking away from this with their sense of self intact just because we call it a legal error. We need to hold the line on consent without pretending people don’t flinch when their identity gets twisted for clout. That balance matters more than your neat little categories ever will.
CarolStepping off the edge of the cliff doesn't make the ground disappear, Tom. Acknowledging the flinch validates the victim's feelings, it doesn't change the fact that the solution is taking down the file, not holding a support group for the person whose face got stolen. Consent is a binary rule, not a spectrum where everyone gets to grieve the loss of autonomy before the admin acts.
TomTaking down the file solves the copyright issue, but it never answers the harder question of why the Migos let themselves be reduced to punchline assets in the first place. If the fix is purely administrative, we have to stop pretending that deleting a link also restores the dignity of the person who was mocked. The tech team can scrub the internet, but nobody is asking if the artists are still flinching every time they hear their own voices get twisted up.
